Safe Boating Awareness Week
North American Safe Boating Awareness Week for 2011 ran from May 21 – 27. With media impressions reaching an all time high of almost 80 million, the event is deemed to be another 'home run' for the CSBC. The week launched with Ready Set Inflate, the second year of setting a world record for lifejacket inflations. This year Canada and the United States were joined by the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil and Australia. A quick summary of participation shows that there were 1,685 participants which was an increase of 531 over last year. Inherently buoyant lifejackets were included in this year’s event, which helped increase the overall total. The event had 1,191 inflatable inflations which was an increase of 37 over 2010. There were a number of significant events in Canada including an incredible 150 participating from the east coast as part of the Atlantic Canada Paddling Symposium, Trenton in Central Canada was back again with 40 inflations, half a dozen better than last year. On the west coast, 43 inflations were recorded when the office of Transport Canada, the Lifesaving Society and the BC Marine Trades Association teamed up once again to break their previous year's record with 37 inflations.
